School of Natural Resource Management
Students studying Agricultural Management at the George campus do so in some of the most beautiful settings and natural surroundings that South Africa has to offer: from the warm Indian ocean with its stunning beaches, through the evergreen indigenous forests and fynbos clad mountains to the karoo hinterland. Due to the tremendous diversity of the Southern Cape, students are exposed to a great array of agricultural systems and accompanying niche industries.
Agriculture is no longer merely a traditional farming operation. Economic and environmental pressures have forged a highly competitive global agricultural industry encompassing food and fibre production, processing, packaging, distribution and exports - all driven by market and consumer forces. In order to meet the challenges offered by the agricultural industry, managers need a combination of sound technical, business and entrepreneurial skills. The aim of our Department is then to provide opportunities for development of entrepreneurship in both primary and secondary agricultural systems and the self-empowerment of rural communities through our excellence in scholarship, research and community engagement.
The main emphasis of the entrepreneurial agricultural manager is the unique combination of natural, human and financial resources in order to create wealth and prosperity in a manner that would ensure long term sustainability.
Our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for a professional and entrepreneurial career in farming, agri-business and related fields in the natural resource industries. Career opportunities include amongst others: farming, farm management, agricultural consultancy & extension, food distribution, agri-tourism, game farm management, agricultural finance, nursery, landscape & golf course management, research & biotechnology and ultimately self employment.
